Hello table so nice to see everyone at the table again. I know that it’s been a while, but as you know my hands are in several other pots and of course I took a little vacation. It’s hard being creative and cute at the same time, I’m just joking but it’s true. I’m winking at you!
Anyway I had to discuss this topic because it seems as if it needs as much attention as possible. What do you think I’m talking about? The shooting in the Florida school. Now before anyone rolls their eyes are say anything negative let me first say my prayers are with each and every one of the families at the school including teachers and the other workers that were there. Secondly, I will not play down any killings that have happened at any school or to any teen anywhere.
This incident does not bring to light gun control because this incident has happened more than once at a school and in a lot of cities throughout America. Which brings me to my third point it’s a travesty that this happened, but I’m glad it happened now. Why? It happened in February black history month. Again you look confused as you read this, so don’t get into your feelings continue reading the post and then form your opinion.
Senseless killing with guns has been a part of African-American culture for a very long time. Over the last few years we have rallied together more than ever through a movement called #blacklivesmatter because African-American men and women were being killed by police and random citizens without any justification coming to the deceased. We have been asking for gun control for a while and it fell on deaf ears. The BLM movement was even being called a gang and a violent movement. Oh and please don’t get it twisted there weren’t just African-Americans protesting but all races and ethnicities who felt the injustice, but no one seemed to hear.
Fast forward to present day and a young student for whatever reason decided to open fire into a school. There are so many questions that go through everyone’s mind, but the one most ringing in our head and not being answered is how could something like this happen? Here is the best part of the tragedy, young people from Florida and everywhere started standing up and started making their voices be heard.
This country’s young people have rallied together for a common enemy: gun control. So why did it take so long? You’re probably still trying to see why I’m glad it happened now. Well their common enemy is African-Americans enemy as well. No one listened to the community that have been crying for change, but will you listen to our youth? I believe the parents of these children probably felt their child was safe the things that you see on T.V. you don’t have to worry about and why should they they’re children. Well the children shouldn’t have to worry about anything, but being children, but the parents definitely should be concerned about anything that affects someone else in this country.
Never feel that you’re above someone else because it doesn’t up front include you. Remember cause and effect. Whatever happens to one will inadvertently have some impact on you at some point. This country is so stuck in the mode it doesn’t concern me until it happens in my own backyard. Maybe if more people other than people of color would have spoken up about gun control when Trayvon Martin was murdered or Mike Brown than maybe some officials wouldn’t be in office now.
Maybe we could have had some laws concerning gun control back then, but a lot of people stayed out of it because it wasn’t their fight. We are in a melting pot and trust me you will always feel the effect of this country’s decisions no matter if it’s tomorrow, two years or twenty years from now. Stand up teens everywhere and make your voices heard because knightlydiscussions stands with you. Shout-out the injustice and hurt you feel, we will listen. Tears form in my eyes as I think about my own children as they grow. This is not a gun problem it’s a people problem.
This is the month to understand your neighbor. Your eyes are open now don’t close them again. Let me know your thoughts. Keep it respectful. See you at the next discussion.
